"The Interview"

I am interviewing my supervisor Diana Tavarez. She is 25 years old and she is from Brooklyn. She is the HR coordinator for NY1 news.

She was able to get the job because she started as an intern in her last year of college and then went to a free position as an HR assistance. She has four years with the company. She went to Baruch college , she studied Human Resources management and industrial organization. She is still involved in school getting her masters for Labor Relations.

How long have you lived in New York?
I lived in New York all my life.

Where did you go to high School? What kind of students were you? What were your favorite classes? What sports or extracurricular activities did you do?
I went to high school in Manhattan at JKO High School. I was an honor Roll student. My favorite class was math and my least favorite one was science. I played track and field. I used to volunteer Bowery Mission and I also tutored kids.

Did you go to college? What degree did you earn? Are you interested in going back to school? If so what do you plan to study?
Yes, I am currently attending graduate school at Baruch college for three years, I am earning my Industrial Labor Relations degree.

How did you choose your current occupation?
I was introduce to HR in my I/O (Industrial and organization) psychology class in my third year of college and that’s when I made the switch from accounting To HR ( Human Resources).

What steps did you take to get this Job? How did you learn about it? How many interviews did you have? Was the Hiring process difficult? If a person were looking for a job at your Company what advise would you offer?
I attended many , many internship fairs and that’s why I landed to this job. My school had a career internship about this job , which I attended and that‘s how I learned about it. I had only one interview. The hiring process was not difficult because I did research on the company and I practiced my resume. If someone was looking for a job at my company I would tell them to do research on the company. To come up with fashion. To be enthusiastic, eager and motivated. Come in with questions and be yourself.

What is your job title and what are three tasks or responsibilities you do most often?
I am the HR coordinator for NY1 News. Three tasks and responsibilities I do more often are:
  • Respond to employees inquires
  • Assist new hires in their upboarding process
  • Manage the internship program
Did you work somewhere else before this job? Where? For how long? How was that job similar or different?
Yes, I worked in retail and accounting in Manhattan for less than a year. It was very different because in accounting you are lock in a room, here you interact with employees.

What do you see as your future at this company? If you plan on changing jobs, what will you do?
I have a passion for Human Resources and I want to focus on training and development.

How do you hope I, a high school intern, can most help your company or organization?
I hope that you , as a high school intern can bring up fresh ideas and new efficient way of processing.

Internship Week 1 "First Impression"

My supervisors’ names are Diana Tavarez and Angela Legall- Morales. Diana Tavarez is the HR coordinator and she works within the HR department. Angela Legall-morales is the Tape librarian and she is in charged of NY1 news‘s videos. Both of my supervisors have their own little office.

Diana Tavarez is a very friendly, informative and caring person. She always smile when I arrive in NY1 and that makes me feel welcomed and she is always keeping me in touch with the subject . She is an assiduous and decisive worker. She assures that her tasks are due on time and she is quick at making decisions and that inspired me a lot. She is such an inspiring and competent person. I will be able to learn a lot from her during this internship.

Angela Legall-Morales is very communicative and humorous. I remember the first day of internship I had her and I was so shy and she said , “ Come a little closer, I won’t bite you” that made laugh and that day she spent most of the time teaching me about news industry. She is industrious and organized. She works hard and she is good at organizing things. I was impressed the first time I went to her library, she arranged all videos chronologically. That made it easier for her to look for videos to lend to people whenever they want to borrow videos from a specific period of time. I consider her as very impressive and optimistic person. I will also learned a lot from her during this internship.

Going to NY1 is very unusual for me because I’ve never been to Manhattan that often and I feel amazed just by seeing the streets. The streets are very calm and you see people walking and minding their own business. You see cars going up and down. I see many restaurant and clothing stores. When I am going to NY1 I pass through Chelsea market to get there because it’s located inside of it. Sometimes I stop to look at some clothes but sometimes I just walk directly outside without stopping because I want to get there on time. NY1 is a very silent and safe environment. All the workers are adults and I am the only high school intern around. The others are college interns. The place is enormous and there are still places I haven’t visited yet. Every workers has their own little office. There’s a place where editors, writers and producers corporate and you see a lot of offices together. There are some employees who have their office apart but some of them are in a big room together and each one has their own desk and computers.

In my internship I see news coordinators, employees, reporters , college interns and consumers.

So far, I have completed outreach with my supervisor Diana Tavares. I helped her create outreach from job postings and send to several schools in via email and upload copy of email to BrassRing. I also helped with shaklan HR coordinator. I helped her completed the 1000 hours report for freelance employees system. We used employees report and excel. With my other supervisor Angela-Morales, I created a written list for tapes to be archived.

I go intern in Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 2:30 Pm to 5:00 pm. In Mondays I work with Angela and Thursdays with Diana. In Friday it’s temporary, it’s whether Diana or Angela. It depends on who I had last Friday. I arrive at home around 6:20 Pm each day.

My internship is a really fun site and it offers many opportunities. I am still figuring out which department I want to work with. There are so many departments . I think it’s best if I try this one first and maybe later I will move to another one.
